Chime is built with a focus on a fast, modern SMS/MMS experience. To provide certain rich features, the app makes specific network requests under the hood.
Data Collection and Network Activity
While we do not collect telemetry or usage analytics on our own servers, the app does interact with third-party servers to power rich messaging features:
- Link Previews (OpenGraph Metadata)
When you receive an SMS or MMS containing a URL, Chime automatically fetches metadata (such as the title, description, and image) from that URL so it can display a rich preview card.- Privacy Impact: This automatic background fetch means that the server hosting the link will see a request originating from your IP address as soon as the message is rendered on your screen. This could potentially be used by senders as a read receipt or to log your IP address (zero-click tracking).
- Business Messaging Avatars (RCS/RBM)
To display logos for businesses you message, Chime attempts to guess the brand's website domain from their RBM address and automatically requests their favicon via api.companyenrich.com.- Privacy Impact: This means your IP address and the domain names of the businesses you are interacting with via SMS/RCS are sent to a third-party API (
companyenrich.com) to retrieve the logo.
By using the app, you acknowledge and consent to these background network requests which are necessary for the rich previews and contact avatars.
Local Processing
Other features, such as message categorization (OTP, Personal, Transactions, Updates) and smart actions, are processed entirely locally on your device using on-device machine learning models. No message content is uploaded for these features.
